EXP 4.0: The Next Generation in Auto Clutch Technology

EXP 4.0 is Rekluse’s best auto clutch technology yet. Learn about the development of the latest generation of Rekluse auto clutches here.

Expand

Referring to Rekluse’s “auto clutch” systems is much more simply stated than achieved. Auto clutch technology has been meticulously engineered, tested, and developed through several generations in the engines of many different brands and types of motorcycles. But, what are the benefits of running an auto clutch in the first place?

Benefits of an Auto Clutch and How it Works

Swing a leg over a motorcycle equipped with a Rekluse auto clutch system – whether it be a RadiusX or RadiusCX – and roll on the throttle and riders will notice they can start and stop without the clutch lever. The automatic engagement and disengagement of the clutch is based on engine RPM, allowing the EXP disk to perform what you’d normally do by pulling in the lever, on its own. This eliminates stalling and improves rider control, maximizing traction and confidence to navigate challenging terrain. Plus, riders can run a gear taller, allowing the suspension and chassis to settle and work better.

KTM Off-road EXP 4.0
Auto clutch systems can provide a wide range of benefits outside of just eliminating stalling.

The EXP disk is the magic ingredient behind the functionality and benefits of Rekluse auto clutches. About 10 years ago, Rekluse introduced an innovatively redesigned version of its revolutionary auto clutch technology with EXP 3.0. The years of racing, testing and development since have led to Rekluse’s most refined auto clutch experience yet; Introducing EXP 4.0. Rekluse engineers went through every aspect of the EXP auto clutch disk design to achieve three major goals: More direct power delivery, improved durability, and rider-focused functionality.

Shop RadiusX and RadiusCX clutch systems featuring EXP 4.0 for your bike below.

How Can you Upgrade Your Rekluse 3.0 Auto Clutch to 4.0?

If your bike is already equipped with a Rekluse auto clutch system using EXP 3.0 – whether it be RadiusX, RadiusCX, or Core EXP 3.0 – there’s a quick and convenient option for you. Depending on your system, you have the choice of purchasing an EXP 4.0 assembly on its own, or an EXP 4.0 assembly plus a fresh clutch pack with complete with drive plates and TorqDrive friction disks and baskets (for applicable models).

The upgrade is simple! Backwards compatibility with Rekluse 3.0 systems is drop-in ready; Simply replace your EXP 3.0 disk with your new EXP 4.0 disk and you’re ready to enjoy all the advantages of the latest generation auto clutch.

EXP 4.0 auto clutch disk
EXP 4.0 was designed and tested to achieve three goals: More direct power delivery, improved durability, and rider-focused functionality.

What Changes were made with EXP 4.0 from EXP 3.0?

First, the base material used for EXP 4.0 has been updated to provide better strength in high temperature environments, critical for the heat clutch systems create. Next, the internal wall of EXP 4.0 bases were redesigned for strength and rigidity, which helps translate to a more connected lever feel for the rider.

EXP 4.0 bases
EXP 4.0 improvements started at the bases, using improved material and design for provide better strength in the harsh environments of clutch systems.

On the outside of the EXP disk, riders will notice the friction pads now match the proprietary friction design found on Rekluse TorqDrive clutch plates. Applying this friction pad design helps match oil flow characteristics of the clutch pack beneath, promoting improved cooling capability and consistent operation.

EXP 4.0 TorqDrive friction pad design
EXP 4.0 uses a TorqDrive friction pad design, improving oil cooling and flow, improving longevity.

The ‘wedges’ are a critical component to the centrifugal functionality of EXP 4.0. In the previous iteration, the wedges would slide up and down ramps built into the EXP bases to engage and disengage the clutch. EXP 4.0’s wedge has been improved to now use rolling contact with built-in pins. Rolling versus sliding creates less friction and resistance, providing smoother engagement and a more responsive feel, creating stronger power delivery overall.

EXP 4.0 wedges
EXP 3.0 vs. EXP 4.0

The wedge and ramp design of EXP 4.0 has been improved with rolling action vs. sliding, creating less friction and resistance for more direct power delivery and smoother engagement.

Not only is engagement smoother and more responsive, but the engagement curves of EXP 4.0 have been designed to better match the engine characteristics of modern motorcycles. Improved tuning options play a role in this as well, as riders now have the option to set up their EXP 4.0 with a combination of light, medium and heavy wedge weights in addition to having multiple EXP disk spring options as they did with 3.0. This creates much more potential for riders to optimize their clutch and engine characteristics based on riding conditions. However, if you’re a rider that likes load-up and go, EXP 4.0 comes with recommended settings out of the box.

EXP 4.0 KTM 350
EXP 4.0 bike test group

EXP 4.0 disks were developed and tested to complement the engine characteristics of a wide variety of modern bikes.

EXP 4.0 will be featured in all new RadiusX and RadiusCX auto clutch kits going forward, and will also be retrofitted to those same kits as they are restocked for existing models. Any riders that currently have a Rekluse auto clutch system with EXP 3.0 can quickly and easily upgrade to EXP 4.0 with a simple disk swap and adjustment check.

Which V-Twin Clutch is Right for You?

Rekluse’s lineup of V-Twin clutch systems and components serve a wide range of riders and machines, from weekend cruisers to high-performance race builds. Get the full breakdown of Rekluse V-Twin clutch offerings here to better understand which one is right for you.

Expand

Many riders may be influenced by the common misconception that a motorcycle clutch can only function one way and that it’s a static system they must adapt themselves to. Since its inception, Rekluse has been dedicated to proving and sharing with riders everywhere that is not the case. In fact, clutch components can be designed, manufactured, and fine-tuned to improve the riding experience, help new or learning riders, optimize performance delivery, improve functional longevity, and everything in between.

Riders familiar with the Rekluse name may also be influenced by the common misconception that Rekluse is solely an “auto clutch” brand. In fact, this is only a sliver of the truth. With manual clutch and auto clutch components, Rekluse is dedicated to leading clutch technology innovation which means all types of riders and machines are included, from high-performance competition to adaptive riders, to enthusiasts looking for comfort, longevity and lighter lever pull (up to 60%), improved lever modulation, and everything in between.

Why Rekluse?

To sum this up, why choose a Rekluse clutch for your V-Twin?

  • Systems and components for auto or manual functionality to serve performance and riding needs and preference.
  • Lighter, smoother lever pull.
  • Simultaneously optimizes performances and durability.
  • Perfect complement for stock or built engines.
  • Improve comfort and adaptability for new riders.
  • Auto clutches can help complement needs of adaptive riders.
  • Provide competitive performance in racing competition.
  • Performance complement to built engines
  • Free your clutch hand in stop-and-go traffic
  • For demanding riding situations such as riding two-up towing a trailer and trike applications

What will you Experience Riding with a Rekluse Clutch?

Swinging a leg over a bike equipped with a RadiusX auto clutch, starting it and clicking it into gear does not require a pull of the clutch lever. The clutches EXP technology allows the bike to sit and idle in gear without keeping the clutch lever pulled in. Simply roll on the throttle and you’re up and rolling! Make no mistake, however, the clutch still retains all its normal functionality, and can be used as you always have any time.

Riding a machine equipped with a TorqDrive manual clutch, riders will immediately notice a lighter clutch lever pull, leading them to also notice improved modulation which translates to ease of power delivery control through a broader friction zone. Additionally, the increased torque transfer is felt directly, transferring more power to the rear wheel and connecting with the ground. On top of all that, clutch durability is maximized beyond OEM.

So, how does Rekluse clutch technology accomplish these feats?

Rekluse V-Twin Clutch Technology

We’ve covered the why, but how does Rekluse accomplish these benefits? To understand which clutch best fits your riding and performance needs, we need to first understand the clutch technology bases as it pertains to V-Twin engines.

  • EXP
  • TorqDrive

EXP Technology – The Key to the Auto Clutch

In V-Twin applications, EXP refers to the EXP disk of RadiusX auto clutch systems. Rekluse’s EXP disk is responsible for engaging and disengaging the clutch based on centrifugal force. When the motorcycle reaches a certain rpm, the EXP wedges slide out to expand the disk and engage the clutch. All of this is happening from engine idle to about 3,000 rpm. The point at which the clutch engages can be fine-tuned with different springs for a customized feel.

EXP technology is used in RadiusX auto clutch systems for V-Twins, and sits on top of the clutch stack featuring TorqDrive friction plates included in the kit.

This illustration how the EXP disk enables auto clutch functionality.

TorqDrive Technology – Increase Torque Capacity, Optimize Power Transfer

Exactly what the name implies, TorqDrive is based on the principle that using more friction plates in a clutch pack creates increased torque capacity. Rekluse accomplished this by decreasing the thickness of their plates in order to use more plates in the same confines, while developing their own friction material for increased durability.

TorqDrive friction disk technology for V-twins.
TorqDrive friction disk technology for V-twins.

Summed up by the Rekluse engineering and product team, “The idea was to increase torque capacity to the system. Ultimately, the goal was to allow for more tuning options, lighter feel at the lever, and lessen clutch operating temperatures. We learned that some other companies along with OEMs were using standard-based friction plates, yet high-performance or even high-mileage riders and builders were experiencing issues with longevity and experiencing clutch fade, which was caused by expansion. Our goal was to find a fiber compound that was durable, even when the operating temperature became extremely hot, yet be thin enough to fit more fiber plates into that same working area.”

The friction plates are made out of steel, which bucks the trend of using aluminum. When subjected to extreme heat, aluminum expands roughly twice as much as steel. Expansion leads to clutch fade. Rekluse essentially solved an age-old clutch malady through metallurgy.

A TorqDrive clutch (left) compared to an OEM Harley clutch (right).
A TorqDrive clutch (left) compared to an OEM Harley clutch (right).

Additionally, the steel-based friction plates have unusually shaped friction material totally unlike a traditional square or rectangle-shape. The fiber design is based around oil flow, helping maintain consistent cooling qualities that oil plays such a critical role in during engine and clutch operation.

TorqDrive clutch systems for V-Twin applications feature up to six additional friction disks over OEM clutch packs depending on the engine, which helps them offer up to 50% stronger clutch engagement with no increase in lever pull effort.

Furthermore, TorqDrive systems are also adjustable in the sense of fine-tuning lever feel and torque capacity. This is accomplished through optional, lighter springs and a lighter hold-down ring option that is supplied in TorqDrive kits, along with Rekluse’s proprietary basket sleeves designed to improv longevity through reduced basket tang wear – finally an easy solution for notching problems!

RadiusX or TorqDrive for your V-Twin?

When it comes down to choosing the specific clutch system to go with, you’ll want to consider several factors, including desired clutch functionality, primary use case, and performance goals, to name a few.

RadiusX auto clutch benefits:

  • Improves rider control, maximizes traction and promotes confidence navigating difficult riding situations.

The 2022 season marks historical, double 450 Class Championships in Supercross and Motocross for Eli Tomac after his first year with Star Yamaha.

The start of the a new year of racing in January 2022 marked the first of a full season of racing for Eli Tomac on his new Star Yamaha YZ450F ride, a manufacturer switch that initially had everyone making educated guesses at best in regard to Championship performance.

Well, Eli exceeded many people’s expectations with a dominant effort in 2022 Supercross that earned him and the Star Yamaha team the 450SX Title. Relying on a Rekluse Core Manual TorqDrive clutch technology in his YZ450F, Tomac’s attitude was noticeably positive and passionate for racing, which carried into the start of the 2022 Pro Motocross outdoor season.

Read about Eli’s SX Championship here

ET3’s Core Manual TorqDrive clutch helping his YZ450F keep the power to the ground.

The opening round of the Motocross season in May at Fox Raceway was Tomac’s one and only overall finish outside of podium position with a close 4th. After that, Tomac stacked up an impressive and consistent season with one P3, five P2s, and five P1s – four of those wins being consecutive.

Despite that record, Tomac entered the final round only one point ahead of Honda HRC’s Chase Sexton, seemingly the only rider capable of consistently matching his pace throughout the season. Tomac put in a veteran ride with a 1 – 1 moto performance at the final round, earning him the 2022 Pro Motocross 450 Title. This overall and Championship are very special for several reasons. According to several sources, this was likely Tomac’s final outdoor MX season of his career, which also means he won his very last professional motocross race, something he did with his very first race all the way back in 2010.

The Pro Motocross circuit sees varying types of track and weather conditions, all the way up to extreme heat surpassing 100°F during the Fox Raceway finale. Regardless, Eli Tomac and his Star Yamaha machine relied on Rekluse Core Manual TorqDrive to get its massive power to the ground, and to do it consistently, resisting fade and slipping.

Clutch Basket

Outside of friction disk and auto function technology, OEM Harley clutch baskets present another area for improvement. As the back-bone of your entire clutch system, clutch baskets have immense responsibility to not only keep your clutch system functioning properly, but act as the connecting to the engines rotating assembly.

Rekluse HD clutch baskets are constructed from billet aluminum and hard anodized to deliver enhanced clutch modulation, resistance to notching and extended clutch life.

For those that know Tomac, you know he is particular about his clutch feel and performance, and Rekluse is proud to deliver the Championship winning combo Eli raced with.

The 2022 450MX title marks Eli’s fourth Motocross championship, and emphasizes the payoff of Star Racing Yamaha’s and Rekluse’s dedication to performance.

Summing it Up: Rekluse EXP 4.0 Auto Technology Benefits

  • More direct power delivery, improved durability, and rider-focused functionality
  • Upgraded base material providing improved strength at high temperatures
  • Revised base design improving strength and rigidity, translating to more connected lever feel
  • Improved wedge design with pins allows for rolling instead of sliding to expand the disk, creating a more responsive feel and smoother engagement

  • Reduced clutch hand fatigue, especially in heavy traffic, bike rallies, and similar situations
  • Allows full, normal use of the clutch lever. Auto functionality can be overridden on the fly, at any time. Ride the bike and use the clutch as you always have any time you like! RadiusX auto functionality is there when you need it.
  • Eliminates stalling.
  • Allows riders to start and stop without engaging the clutch lever – less fatigue at stop lights an in traffic, meaning longer rides!
  • Tuning springs allow customization of engagement to suit rider preference.
  • Kits include: EXP disk, TorqDrive friction plates, drive plates, EXP adjustment springs, throw out assembly, and basket sleeves to extend the life of your clutch basket.

It’s important to note that the RadiusX auto clutch does also utilize TorqDrive friction disks, so whether your preference is auto or manual, you’ll enjoy the benefits of TorqDrive.

Don’t be fooled by all the scoop tire talk, that wasn’t the only thing helping Tomac pull all his starts this season. #TorqDrive

Rekluse Core components, consisting of a billet inner hub and pressure plate, are designed to greatly improve oil flow over OEM to keep the Rekluse TorqDrive clutch pack cool during the long motos.
